- Les Champauvins 2014 is a beautiful Côtes du Rhône (which should be no surprise coming from this estate), and checks in as a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, from rolled pebble soils, that was aged 70% in stainless steel (Grenache) and 30% in barrel (Syrah and Mourvedre.) Giving up lots of roasted Provençal herbs, garrigue, pepper and currantlike fruit, it is medium to fullbodied, ripe and nicely textured, with impressive purity of fruit. It has outstanding potential and will have a decade of overall longevity.

- One of my favorite estates in Châteauneuf du Pape, Domaine Grand Veneur is internationally recognized for their fabulous Châteauneufs, but they also produce some terrific values. A knockout value is the 'Les Champauvins.'

- The Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore is a very successful interpretation of this popular category of red wine that exists right under Amarone on the quality pyramid. Bold fruit aromas of Morello cherry and plump blackberry are followed by spicy tones of cinnamon and clove. The wine boasts soft tannins with an enduring note of sweet spice on the close.

But Begali's wines never feel too heavy, chewy or thick. There's a characteristic point of sweetness in the mouth followed by long flavors of smoke, ripe fruit, tobacco and grilled herbs.

- The stunning Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 09 is a charmer and a true protagonist of the vintage. The wine delivers everything you should expect from Amarone, but it executes that promise with the utmost elegance and finesse. This is an outstanding effort. Dark prune and plum cake open the bouquet and slowly progress to dried herb, licorice, espresso bean and Indian spice. The mouthfeel is supersmooth and velvety with a longlasting and beautifully polished close. It looks and tastes like Amarone, but this wine carefully refrains from the overt sweetness and chewiness of the others. It’s simply beautiful.

- Brilliant rubyred. Smokeaccented aromas of red and dark berry preserves, star anise and candied flowers convey a subtle hint of garrigue in the background. Sweet, seamless and broad on the palate, offering concentrated black raspberry and rose pastille flavors that turn spicier with air. Rich but vibrant as well, with no excess fat. Supple tannins build steadily on a very long, incisive finish that leaves behind notes of dark berries and candied flowers.
