'Les Champauvins' 2014
AOC Cotes du Rhône
Dom. Grand Veneur | Orange (Châteauneuf du P.)
-
Les Champauvins 2014 is a beautiful Côtes du Rhône (which should be no surprise coming from this estate), and checks in as a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, from rolled pebble soils, that was aged 70% in stainless steel (Grenache) and 30% in barrel (Syrah and Mourvedre.) Giving up lots of roasted Provençal herbs, garrigue, pepper and currantlike fruit, it is medium to fullbodied, ripe and nicely textured, with impressive purity of fruit. It has outstanding potential and will have a decade of overall longevity.

One of my favorite estates in Châteauneuf du Pape, Domaine Grand Veneur is internationally recognized for their fabulous Châteauneufs, but they also produce some terrific values. A knockout value is the 'Les Champauvins.'

Gold medal Best Prosecco of 2016!
The Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships 2016

Delicious, creamy texture to this with dried apple, pear and lemon curd. Subtle and flavorful. Full, dry and fresh. A mineral and white pepper undertone. Spicy green apple too. Drink now. Serious Prosecco as always.
James Suckling 91/100

Step out of the sub £ 10 catergory and you'll get a much more exciting and complex Prosecco. Here, focused but delicate peach and white floral notes join zesty acidity on a refined palate with sweetness on the finish.
Decanter 90/100
-
Still has some of the lovely orchard and ctirus aromas of the Brut but also a more creamy quality to the nose. Fuller in the mouth and seems perhaps slightly richer, if not sweeter. Mouthfilling but still deliciously aromatic and fresh. Attractive slightly chalky texture.

IGT Toscana (Bolgheri)
Castello del Terriccio | Castellina Marittima
-
The 2006 is a beautifully centered, poised wine layered with exceptional purity in its aromas and flavors. Ripe dark fruit, menthol, espresso, spices and licorice emerge from this focused, powerful Castello. Ideally, the wine is best cellared for a number of years. The Castello is one of Tuscany’s slowest wines to mature, at least in its early years. Anticipated maturity: 20162026.

The wines of Castello del Terriccio are stunning. This is a fabulous set of wines from proprietor Gian Annibale Rossi di Medelana and consulting oenologist Carlo Ferrini.

Blackberry and violet aromas, as well as some licorice, follow through to a full body, with chewy tannins and a long, silky finish. This is dense and tight, but very wellstructured.

Surprisingly Impressive, thick dark ripe fruit, minty from the oak, slightly developed, dark and spicy, chocolate, on the palate precision, velvety, very great refined mouthfeel with fattyness ripe fruit, elegance grip, rough edges, tannins a tat green, but so very good with great finale. Would love to drink this every week.

DOC Valpolicella Ripasso
David Sterza | Casterna (Verona)

Wonderful aromas of ripe fruit and rose petals with hints of flower leafs. Medium to full body, tangy acidity and a bright and vibrant finish. A Ripasso with verve.
James Suckling 93/100 (jg.'13)

The Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore is a very successful interpretation of this popular category of red wine that exists right under Amarone on the quality pyramid. Bold fruit aromas of Morello cherry and plump blackberry are followed by spicy tones of cinnamon and clove. The wine boasts soft tannins with an enduring note of sweet spice on the close.
Robert Parker 91+/100 (jg.'12)

Here's a delicious and wellbalanced ripasso that combines the freshness of Valpolicella with the structure of Amarone. It has lingering aromas of blackberry, licorice and graphite, with a whiff of moist earth. The palate delivers plum, prune, carob and nutmeg flavors, along with polished tannins and fresh acidity.

A great Greco, the absolute best out of this vintage; the cleanliness of smell is blameless, rare is the expressive smoothness. Not a sulphurous (=zwavel) cloud, not a hint of burnished sun, only the fruit, pure vitality and prime. It's in this wine a great extractive richness, in every reach or reverb of absolute aroma's allure, persistence and density marvelously impressive. Chapeau!

The 2011 Vernaccia di San Gimignano Riserva shows an etched and sharp quality with bright herbal aromas of sage and rosemary twig followed by tangy citrus and sweet peach. This is a complete and very attractive interpretation of the Vernaccia grape. That mild but compelling complexity continues to the mouth where the wine is soft, layered and refreshing.

Surprisingly good! Dried fruit, spices, a little traditional oxidated nose, modern and still quite refined. Where the ripasso has less alcohol it's less noticeable in the amarone. Oak definately present, but mouthfeel good and refined, bold yet elegant. Good Wine and not that overextracted powerhouse stuff.

David Sterza is one of my favorite undertheradar producers in Valpolicella. Low prices and excellent quality make him wellworth seeking, especially if you love Amarone and Ripasso.

A transparent Amarone with beautiful aromas and length. Full body, ultrafine tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Yet remains balanced and beautiful. Plenty of dried berry and walnut character.
James Suckling 94/100 (2010)

From one of my favorite producers in the Veneto, the 2010 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a complete and delicious red wine. The bouquet is absolutely distinctive in terms of its intensity and power. This is a full throttle red to enjoy by the fireplace in the dead of winter. Dark fruit, prune, tar and licorice are followed by blackberry preserves and Teriyaki smoke. This is huge wine in terms of power, determination and persistency.

Aromas of ripe red berries, candied rose, vanilla and pipe tobacco, with a mineral element contributing vivacity. Juicy, penetrating and gently sweet on the palate, offering vibrant raspberry and cherry flavors that deepen on the back half. Shows very good heft and power on a long, focused finish framed by harmonious, slowbuilding tannins.

The 2009 Viña Alberdi, from a much warmer growing season than 2008, was equally pure Tempranillo sourced from their vineyards in Rodezno and Labastida, matured in American oak barrels for two years. The palate has round fruit, polished tannins and has less acidity than the 2008.

This opens with intense fragrances of peach and apricot that carry over to the palate alongside a juicy lemon flavor. It also boasts mouthwatering salinity and mineral sensations and, while it’s delicious now, hold for 2–3 years to develop additional dimensions of flavor.
