There’s a lot going on: background tones of balsam herb, rosemary and black olive follow straightforward aromas of dried fruit and prune. A pretty touch of eucalyptus springs forth. The wine is incredibly light, buoyant and lively despite the elaborate Ripasso process.

From pergolatrained overhead vines, the Amarone della Valpolicella Classico exhibits inner harmony and grace. Like all Amarone, the bouquet and the mouthfeel are rich and powerful. But Begali's wines never feel too heavy, chewy or thick. There's a characteristic point of sweetness in the mouth followed by long flavors of smoke, ripe fruit, tobacco and grilled herbs.

The stunning Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 09 is a charmer and a true protagonist of the vintage. The wine delivers everything you should expect from Amarone, but it executes that promise with the utmost elegance and finesse. This is an outstanding effort. Dark prune and plum cake open the bouquet and slowly progress to dried herb, licorice, espresso bean and Indian spice. The mouthfeel is supersmooth and velvety with a longlasting and beautifully polished close. It looks and tastes like Amarone, but this wine carefully refrains from the overt sweetness and chewiness of the others. It’s simply beautiful.

A mutation of Trebbiano di Abruzzo.This grape was bought back from near extinction. Only a dozen of vineyards grow this grape from Spoleto to Montefalco. Very aromatic reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc. Incredibly opulent, this white just keeps giving with every mouth quenching sip.

Bright goldenyellow. Powerful aromas of pineapple, honeyed peach and poached pear are accented by lemon rind and floral notes. Sappy, clinging tropical fruit, peach and candied citrus flavors are complicated by vanilla. One of the best Trebbiano Spoletino wines ever made by Perticaia; this gently aromatic white grape is garnering increasing interest among producers in Umbria. Perticaia's version also speaks more clearly of the variety than many others do.
