Slimme weetjes: Waar staat Rueda DO voor?

Rueda is a wine region at the heart of the Iberian Peninsula, located just north-west of the Spanish capital, Madrid. It is known for its dry, aromatic white wines made predominantly from Verdejo, with small quantities of Viura and Sauvignon Blanc. These fresh, aromatic whites are an ideal complement to the heavy Tempranillo-based reds of neighboring Toro.

Standard Rueda Blanco must be made from at least 50% Verdejo, a variety so aromatic that even substantial additions of neutral-scented Viura (aka Macabeo) do little to reduce its character. Relatively recent additions to the region's wine portfolio are the varietal wines 'Rueda Verdejo' and 'Rueda Sauvignon', which must be made from at least 85% of the stated variety.

Slimme weetjes: De Verdejo druif

Verdejo is a variety of wine grape that has long been grown in the Rueda region of Spain. The grape originated in North Africa, and was spread to Rueda in about the 11th Century, possibly by Mozarabs. Verdejo was generally used to make a strongly oxidized, Sherry-like wine. In the 1970s the winemaking company Marqués de Riscal began to develop a fresher style of white wine based on Verdejo with the help of French oenologist Émile Peynaud. cIn 1980 white wines from the Rueda region were recognized by a Denominación de Origen (DO). Wines labeled Rueda must contain 50% Verdejo; the remainder is typically Sauvignon blanc or Macabeo. Wines designated "Rueda Verdejo" must contain 85% Verdejo, and are often 100% Verdejo.

The Verdejo grapes are generally harvested at night. This means that the grapes enter the cellar at the lower night-time temperature of between 10-15 C instead of the daytime temperature which in September can reach as high as 28 or 30 C. Lower temperatures means less oxidation, or browning of the juice. Verdejo wines are aromatic, often gentle, and full-bodied.

Bright straw, nose is fresh with fresh fruit, white flowers, expressive. Flavourful and fruity palate with good acidity, nicely balanced.Guía Peñín 91/100 (jg '13)
This Verdejo from sandy soils is pure and crystalline on the nose, with mineral, apple and honeydew aromas. The palate is lifted, fresh and flows like a stream, while white grapefruit, orange peel and lime flavors finish steady and minerallyWine Enthusiast 91/100 (jg '13)
Pale yellow. Vibrant, mineral-accented citrus and orchard fruits on the highly perfumed nose and palate. Dry and tightly wound, offering intense lemon/lime and pear skin flavors underscored by chalky minerality. Shows very good energy and thrust on the incisive finish, which leaves a chalky note behind. This would make a great match with raw shellfish. -- Josh RaynoldsVinous - Antonio Galloni 90/100 (jg '13)
